Investigations on the interactions between the number of virulence genes of different races of barley powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis DC. f. sp. hordei Marchal) and their fitness

Eleven single spore isolates of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei with different numbers of virulence genes were compared with respect to the epidemiological parameters latent period, disease efficiency, colony growth, and spore production in order to elucidate the interactions between the number of virulence genes and fitness. No mutual effects of virulence and fitness were observed. Some complex races exhibited greater fitness than other complex or less complex races and vice versa. The race showing highest fitness possessed three virulence genes and the race with lower fitness only two virulence genes. It is concluded that complexity did not necessarily reduce fitness
