The mountainous areas of the central part of Chile which are exploited by semi-arid cultivation methods are threatened by moderate to severe erosion. From an analysis of the ecological and socio-economic cirumstances, the following improvement possibilities that are aimed at an ecologically adjusted land utilization seem realistic: For large enterprises, further extension of forest reconstruction, under widest utilization of domestic leaf tree varieties however, particularly on the degraded east slope of the coastal mountain range; for medium size enterprises, the intensivation of land utilization, under elimination of plow cultivation and by using soil-conserving measures and minimum tillage practices; for small farms, the transition to agro-forestry models.
