Effect of different prey on Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae)

In the present study, the effect of feeding with different prey on the development, mortality and fecundity of the green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea was investigated in the laboratory. Besides a high mortality of 85 per cent, the feeding with Tetranychus urticae caused a significantly longer development period of the C. carnea larvae than Myzus persicae and Mamestra brassicae-eggs. The feeding with the four aphid species M. persicae, Aphis fabae, Brevicoryne brassicae and Acyrthosiphon pisum revealed only small differences in the developmental time of C. carnea between the species and a higher mortality occurred only with B. brassicae as prey. The combination of feeding with unfavorable and favorable prey at different larval stages revealed that developmental time was shorter and mortality higher when the 1st- and 2nd-stage larvae were fed with the unfavorable T. urticae and the 3rd-stage larvae with the favorable M. persicae. In the adult C. carnea, shortly after emerging a high mortality was observed, when the respective larvae had fed on T. urticae or M. brassicae-eggs, whereas no mortality occurred when M. persicae had been given as prey. The surviving females laid fertilized eggs whereby a highly prolonged preoviposition occurred in females developed from larvae fed on T. urticae. Of the four aphid species used as prey for the larvae, only A. fabae caused a high mortality in the C. carnea adults. Except for the females deriving from larvae that fed on A. pisum, the oviposition varied strongly. The combined use of T. urticae and M. persicae as prey lead to a high mortality and long duration of the preoviposition as well as high variations in oviposition, especially when the 3rd-stage larvae were fed with T. urticae
