Derris elliptica Benth roots, collected from Sylhet and Chittagong districts of Bangladesh, were bioassayed with and without additives to study their lethal effects on the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch). The LC(50) value for the roots collected from Sylhet and Chittagong were 63.9 and 114.8 ppm, respectively. Additives like tobacco leaf dust, linseed oil mixed with sulphur, castor oil, and etheral castor oil decreased the toxicity of the root powder. The toxicant in the root powder showed complete detoxication in 6-7 days.
