A survey of pond fishery resources in Mirzapur upazila under Tangail district Bangladesh was conducted to determine the physical condition and fish culture status of ponds and problems with the fish culture. The results obtained from the survey revealed that the majority of ponds of the upazila were not under fish culture. The fish culture status varied with the age and number of owners of ponds. Recently constructed ponds with lower number of owners were usually under culture. Regarding the problems of fish culture, multiple ownership was found the most important. Among others, the lack of scientific knowledge, lack of fund, incidence of flooding and unavailability of fish fry were found important. These problems could be solved by (i) leasing out the ponds under multiple ownership to an interested person/group, (ii) using public ponds through cooperatives, (iii) providing adequate credit facilities to the poor farmers, (iv) making fish fries available to the pond owners and (v) ensuring them proper training on scientific fish culture.
