Bibliographic access to state agricultural experiment station publications

State agricultural experiment station publications are a valuable resource for agricultural historians and sociologists, as well as for scientists, students, the agribusiness community, farmers, and the general public. They are little used because bibliographic access to them is fragmented and has to be pursued by using several indexes, most of which include references to other types of agricultural literature. Only one source, List of Bulletins of the Agricultural Experiment Stations in the United States from their Establishment to the End of 1920 and Supplements, 1875-1942, is entirely devoted to them. Some individual stations have indexed their own publications. A search of the AGRICOLA database, limited to station publications, makes it possible to obtain a list published since 1970. To fill the gap between 1942 and 1970, the indexes providing access to all types of agricultural literature, The Experiment Station Record, Agricultural Index, Bibliography of Agriculture, and the CAB abstracting journals, need to be used. Only the Bibliography of Agriculture and Agricultural Index provide a separate monthly list to station publications, and neither has been cumulated. Indexes listing state publications, Monthly Checklist of State Publications, and Selected0449 Agricultural Publications, include station publications but do not give them separate treatment.
