For alleviation of rice root retrogradation at ripening stage by improving the root-zone environment, the effects of soil conditioners (compost, rice straw, silicate et al.) alone or in combination were investigated in imperfectly drained soil during 1985-1986. Redox potential (Eh) in soil during high temperature period, from July 10 to July 30, were decreased drastically by-150 to-300mv. Application of organic matters, especially rice straw, caused severe soil reduction, but application of silicate alleviated soil reduction compared to control. Applicatio1277n of organic matters resulted in the decrease of the percentage of root growth below 5 cm soil and root activity. Rice root seemed to be aging early white-browning to dark browning color of lower root, due to increasing Fe(2+) formation brought by severe soil reduc
