Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crasipes Solms) known to produce vigorous mono-specific stands with ability of water pollutant absorption, was studied to see the physio-ecological characteristics and estimate its values as a forage or green manure crop. The yield in fresh weight per hectare was about 3 tons per day in May, the highest yielding month throughout the growing period from Apr to Oct, and the yield depended more on solar radiation than on the temperature if it was above 15 deg C. The optimum concentration of NH+4-N to growth was about 43.3 ppm, and the growth was positive proportionally increased with about 40ppm of continual supply of NH+4-N. Initial concentration about 40ppm of NH+4-N, was absorbed more than 95 % within 5 days while about 80 ppm0839 absorbed within 15 days. The contents of total nitrogen and potassium in the dry matter of water hyacinth were about 5.7 and 5.91 %, respectively, and the content of crude fat reached about 2
