Thinning cycle, i.e. the period between succeeding tending cuttings is one of essential elements in the process of planning. Time interval, height growth and number of removed or left trees are the criteria on the basis of which a thinning cycle is determined. Mathematical equations for calculating thinning cycles are given. The equations should be used selectively as they do not include such circumstances, as for instance: limitations resulting from the control system of forestry organization, tending practices, harvesting, sanitary state of forests. There are possibilities of combining thinning with sanitary fellings
