Environmental conditions in Ecuador support the formation of aflatoxin B1 in maize grain; 88.5 % of test samples were contaminated. Research must be continued on the presence of aflatoxin and other mycotoxins to establish permissible levels. Further systematic research is needed on levels of contamination of mycotoxins in food and feed in the various regions of Ecuador, and on their effects on human and animal health.
