This paper presents the research results during 20 years (1965-1984) concerning the irrigation conditions and water consumption in the hilly zones of Transilvania. Climatic studies demonstrated that in the last 120 years the percentage of dry and normal years was of 63,3% and in the last 20 years, only 2 years didn't need irrigation. Under irrigation conditions late and half-late varieties are recommended. The rate of irrigation is of 400-1950 cubic meters water/ha administred in 1-3 wettings, so that the soil must be moistened at 70 cm depth. The fertilizer doses recommended for a yield of 40-50 tubers/ha are of N(1140100-150), P(100-150) and K(60-100) kg/ha. The total water consumption is of 5293 cubic meters/ha achieved in proportion of 58,7% of rainfalls, 27,8% of water stock in the soil and 15,8% of irrigations. The growth of net profit through irrigation is of 538 lei/ha, at 1 mm water corresponding 68,6
