Assuming a relatively small dairy herd size and outdated stalls, the question arises on whether the tying stalls should be modernized, or also, if for small herds, loose housing systems should be constructed in such a way that they are economically competitive. Two or three-row cubicle houses with 2x2 abreast, 1x4 herringbone or mobile milking parlours should be strived for. Because of the varying old building conditions, individual problem solving is still necessary.
