Availability of major and some micronutrients in the central and southern Mesopotamian riverplain of Iraq

To study major (N, P and K) and micronutrients (Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe) availability in central and southern Mesopotamian riverplain of Iraq, fifty soil sites distributed over this area were sampled at three consecutive depths of 0-30, 30-60 and 60-90 cm. The results showed soil (0-30 cm) ranged from 5 to 56, 2 to 22 and 180 to 820 ppm respectively. All these major nutrient levels decreased with soil depth. Available Fe and Mn in the surface soil ranged from 19 to 60 and 09 to 24 ppm, while available Cu and Zn ranged from 1 to 6 and 0.4 to 3 ppm respectively. With the exception of available Fe which showed no definite pattern, the levels of Mn, Cn and Zn decreased gradually with soil depth. Significant and positive correlation (r=0.56** ) was found between available Fe and soil pH. CaCO3 was only significantly correlated (r=-0.28*** ) with Mn. Positive significant correlations were noted between organic matter and Mn and Zn (r=0.57** and 0.28* respectively). None of the micronutrients under the study found to correlate significantly with clay + silt%
