[Mauretania in the shadow of the fill dam]
1988
Justen, A. (Mission Agricole Allemande, Nouakchott (Mauritania)) | Preuss, H.-J. A.
This article demonstrates by means of case studies from various regions of Mauretania how the development of irrigated agriculture on the right bank of the Senegal River has obviously been pursued too rapidly for the intended target group although even the quantitive goals of expansion have not been achieved. The result has been low yields on only partially cultivated land, meaning that with present prices the cost of plant, maintenance and depreciation are only partly covered. In conjunction with an excessively expensive agency for rural development, the forced cultivation leads to costs which can only be met with the help of constant subsidies from the donors involved. This article therefore pleads for increased promotion of traditional cultivation methods, a moderate expansion of irrigated agriculture and its gradual integration into the traditional farming system, along with the increased inter-donor coordination at all levels, including implementation level, which this entails.
