Experiments to evaluate the side effects of insecticides on populations of several species of staphylinids (Col., Staphylinidae) were carried out in wheat fields of the Halle district (GDR) during three years. The insecticides Decis (Deltamethrin), Filitox (Methamidophos) and Nurelle-D (Chlorpyriphos and Cypermethrin) have been applicated to DC 50 and Bi 58 EC (Dimethoate) to the beginning of milk ripe of the wheat (DC 70). The experiments have been arranged in small plots of 8x9 m size. For catching the beetles pitfall traps were used. Results of the catches in 1986 to 1988 are separately represented for the most frequent staphylinid species Tachyporus hypnorum (L.), Philonthus fuscipennis (Mannh.), Philonthus varius (Gyll.), Tachinus rufipes (De Geer), Oxytelus insecatus Grav., Aleochara bispustulata (L.) and individuals of the genus Atheta. In some cases the proved insecticides did not cause any reduction of the numbers of captured beetles but otherwise even considerable diminution (up to 100 per cent degree of effect) has to be seen. The comparison of the results of the three years often shows differences relating to proved means and beetle species. Measurements of activity density with pitfall traps alone are not sufficient to obtain clear statements about the efficacy of pesticides. Additional prove methods are necessary
