1987
Purwito, D. (Balai Penelitian Kehutanan, Pematang Siantar (Indonesia))
This paper deals with a descriptive account on the comparison between the extent of reforestation and forest fires in North Sumatra. During the last 12 years (1974-1985), more than 50, 729 ha of forest have been burnt in North Sumatra; 26,050 ha and 21,682 ha of which are Pinus merkusii and Acacia auriculifor mis plantations. Meanwhile, in the same time, the reforestation activities cover only an area of about 123,546 ha with an achievement rate of 60-65 percent. Because of annually recurrent forest fires and low reforestation achievement rate, it will take about 87 years to make the present 531, 584 ha critical land reforested.
