Spatial and temporal variability in the inputs, outputs and transformations of mineral-N under field conditions make the predictive modelling of the leaching of soil nitrate difficult. In the absence of nitrate fertilizer applications, the amount of nitrate available for leaching from the soil is dependent on the balance between the nitrification rate and the rate of nitrate removal by plants. Since the nitrification rate is dependent on pH it seemed likely that variability in the nitrification rate and therefore soil nitrate concentrations may be due to variability in soil pH.
