A set of eight varieties of winter wheat was studied for the effects of the dark, light and 0.2M sucrose solution on the induction of frost hardiness in the seedlings. The critical LT50 temperatures, found in the different treatments (cultivation/hardening), are compared through regression analysis with the LT50 values gained in the field-laboratory tests. The dark/dark treatment led only to separation of the low-resistance varieties. All treatments using light divided the varieties into three groups of frost hardiness. The best results were recorded in the treatments with light during cultivation (light/dark, light/light): the respective correlation coefficients of 0.858 and 0.956 were highly significant. When sucrose was applied during cultivation and the seedlings were hardened in the dark, this did not lead to differentiation of the varieties according to their frost hardiness.
