The paper deals with the effects of paclobutrazol on the morphogenesis of adventitious roots in isolated pea (Pisum sativum) epicotyls dipped in a paclobutrazol solution for 24 hours. Paclobutrazol (CULTAR) applied at concentrations from 0.05 to 0.1 per cent strongly stimulated the number of root primordia; on the other hand, however, it inhibited the elongation growth of roots and promoted their thickening growth. Lower concentrations showed a decreasing effect on numbers of root primordia and inhibited the elongation growth of roots so that a concentration of 0.012 per cent doubled the number of root primordia and the total mass of the root system without any significant effect on the length of developing roots. In cuttings of Ligustrum vulgare, not only a negative effect on the level of endogenous gibberellins was demonstrated but also a positive effect on the level of endogenous IAA; the application of CULTAR (O.1 per cent for 24 hours) on cutting bases showed also a positive effect on rhizogenesis.
