Management strategy to control rice tungro in Indonesia
1987
Manwan, Z.
Rice Tungro Virus (RTV) transmitted by green leafhopper (Nephotettix virescens) is the most serious disease of rice in the tropics. Since 1969, occasional outbreaks of RTV have been reported from various provinces of Indonesia including South Sulawesi. During 1984 and 1985, respectively, 12 and 16 out of 27 provinces of Indonesia were attacked by tungro. However, during this period no serious incidence of RTV was found in South Sulawesi. This achievement was the result of the tungro management strategy developed by the Maros Research Institute for Food Crops (MORIF) in South Sulawesi. The strategy is now being used generally and has three components: appropriate planting times for wet and dry seasons, varietal rotation according to N. virescens resistant gene, and use of insecticides. Efforts are now under way to reduce high RTV incidence by implementing the variety rotation concept throughout Indonesia. The successful management of the tungro problem, however, will depend not only on the implementation of the variety rotation concept but also on taking into consideration the farming practises, socio-economical, regional-development situation and climatic conditions of each location.
