Protein and mineral supplementation in dairy cows
1991
Makombe, W.
Two experiments were conducted to find the effect of protein or mineral supplementation on milk yield, persistency of lactation, milk composition, liveweight changes and on gross margins. Soybean meal was supplemented to the basal diet, maize bran in experiment 1; whereas in experiment 2, monocalcium phosphate and sodium chloride were supplemented to maize bran. Soybean meal supplementation increased milk yield, butterfat content and improved persistency of lactation. Supplementing maize bran with minerals increased milk production and improved persistency of lactation. Liveweight change was not effected. Gross margins for protein and mineral supplementation were MK232.02 and MK154.95 respectively per cow for 305 days of lactation
