The feeding response of larvae of Helicoverpa armigera to various cotton cultivars and strains and corn cultivars and extracts obtained there from was investigated. The weight gain of the larvae was the highest on tassels of seed corn cv. 'FMX-178' and ears of forage corn 'Hazera 712'. These values approached those of larvae on the semisynthetic diet. On cotton, the highest weight gain was obtained with flowers and bolls of cv. 'Pima S-5', and flowers and buds of strain 'TM-1, pilose'. Either flowers or leaves of some Helicoverpa/Heliothis-resistant cotton strains obtained from US sources were fed upon less than were those of two commercial reference cultivars, 'Acala SJ-2' and 'Pima S-5'. The phagostimulatory effect of the extracts of parts of cotton or corn plants was investigated using the Styropor(R) method. The commercial phagostimulant Coax served as control. The highest activity was found with the extracts of the flowers of cotton cv. 'Pima S-5' and the tassels of corn cv. 'Hazera 712'. When mixed with Coax, the extracts of two resistant cotton strains had a certain antagonistic effect, a third strain was indifferent, and with a fourth - phagostimulation was additive
