Upgrading native carabao through artificially induced breeding
1989
Anon.
The use of natural breeding might be the best alternative in upgrading Philippine carabao. Good quality breeding bulls can be dispersed in the barangays [villages] to breed in-heat caracows naturally. However, limited number of good quality breeding bulls is a major constraint. Good native bulls are usually castrated as work animals while the exotic Murrah buffalo bulls are very limited. Given this situation, the most logical strategy is to manipulate estrus through synchronization in combination with the artificial insemination technique. With this approach, the problem of limited availability of good breeding bulls is eliminated. Also, the use of government resources for upgrading program is maximized and the problem on silent heat is overcome. Hence, production of upgraded carabao which will be used eventually in the breeding of carabaos in the barangays is accelerated.
