This study was conducted to evaluate the performance and identify the important operating parameters of an open-core, batch-type, downdraft gasifier with rice hulls as fuels. Three levels of air superficial velocity were used in the study. The results showed that continuous gas production, as indicated by the stable flame, was generated at the superficial velocity of 6.78 cm/sec. The hot-char left by the upward moving combustion zone aids in moisture conversion and tar cracking resulting to a combustible gas and a stable flame in the gas exit. The gas heating value is 3,600-4,000 KJ/SCM and can generate an open flame temperature of 650-750 deg C. At higher superficial velocity, however, the flame produced is erratic and unstable. The results further indicated that this type of gasifier has the potential for direct heat applications in agriculture and rural industries.
