Comparison of integrated weed control and herbicide treatment in apple fruit growing

A four years trial was conducted comparing mechanical soil cultivation with various herbicide treatments and covering of soil with straw and chopped wood material, respectively, in apple tree orchards. Mechanical soil management showed a more negative influence on shoot and root development as compared to the herbicide or covered plots. No significant differences could be detected when leaf or soil herbicides were applied. Also width of the treatment strips didn't show any major effect. In contrast to soil humidity, soil nutrient content was only slightly affected by the various treatments
