Luminescence studies were performed to investigate if there were any alterations in the electron transport chain of three mutants, one resistant to atrazine (AT-r), one to bentazone (Be-r) and one to DCMU (Di-r), of Monoraphidium pusillum (PRINTZ). The total amount of photons emitted as luminescence was lower in old cells of the three mutants and in young Di-r cells than in corresponding Wt cells. Cells of the At-r and Di-r strains emitted a larger proportion of the total photons earlier after termination of the light than Wt cells, whereas Be-r cells showed a more drawn-out emission of photons than Wt cells. Furthermore, the intermediate transient peak 40-60 s after termination of 700 nm light was absent in the mutants. The present data indicate the occurrence of an altered electron transport, a slower induction of the CO2-fixation and phosphorus deficiency in cells of the mutants of M. pusillum. Moreover, cells of the Be-r strain may have some alteration of the function of the chloroplastic ATPas.
