In sub-saharan Africa dependence on woodfuel is almost total as substantial part of wood energy is consumed by the rural communities. These people bear the brunt of fuel shortages and the high cost of available firewood, and have to make long journeys in search of firewood. With rapid population growth more land is required to produce food to feed these people and this means cutting down of more trees which in turn has led to widespread deforestation and soil erosion thus reducing agricultural productivity. Agroforestry is one option for alleviating the fuelwood problems and its consequences. Although farmers do not plant trees solely for fuelwood those who adopt agroforestry have fuelwood as a by-product of the technologies
