The aim of this report is to inquire (3 years of trials) into the compactness caused by agricultural tractors with various types of tyres and tracks, with particular interest in the recent use of wheel with wide and extra-wide radial tyres operating at low pressure. The experiment has been carried out to measure the effects of compactness induced on the land by crossing repeatedly with various vehicles, for each of these multiple crossings have been carried out (1, 3, 5) on the same trodden area. The compact effect has been valued by penetrometrical tests from 0 to 40 cm depth, both on the trodden area and on untrodden soil. The results demonstrate that in the first year of the trial the use of wide tyres stands out as regards conventional ones, in this specific case the only benefit obtained was by a high number of crossing, 5 in particular. In the second year of the trial the benefit obtained from the use of wide tyres was also by as high number of crossings, 3 in particular. In the last year of the trial, test results demonstrate that the use of extra-wide tyres stands out, as regards standard radial ones and same number of crossing, showing a considerable reduction of dynamic resistance
