A feeding trial was undertaken to assess the influence of tannins on intake and digestibility of browse from Acacia karoo, Acacia nilotica, Securinega virosa and Ziziphus mucronata. Faecal nitrogen was high for animals offered A. karoo. However, urinary N was relatively low for animals on this browse. Animals offered the other three browse species produced faecal matter that was low in N. Their urinary N, however was higher than urinary N from animals on A. karoo. A. karoo had the highest tannin content, followed by Z. mucronata, A. nilotica and S. virosa, in that order. Intake of browse was not consistently related to any tannin assay. However, tannins estimated by three different methods were all negatively related to digestibility of the browse/hay mix
