The determination of individual bull calving rates and factors affecting dairy cow fertility
1994
Holmes, I. (Victorian Dept. of Agriculture, Echuca (Australia)) | McClintock, S. (McClintock's Consulting Services, Bacchus Marsh (Australia))
The Herd Improvement Organisation (HIO) databank was used to derive fertility information for individual bulls. There were significant differences in calving rate (CR) of individual AI bulls used in Australia, with high demand bulls varying in CR from about 7 percent above average to 8 percent below average. This 15 percent variation is worth about 23 dollars to the farmer. The fertility of Victorian dairy herds does not appear to be compromised by developments in the dairy industry. High production ABV bulls and cows should continue to be the objective of the industry, subject to taking into account 'days open' when calculating ABVs.
