The disease of livestock is caused by the ingestion of annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) with seed heads infected by a nematode (Anguina sp.) and toxic colonies of the bacterium Corynebacterium sp. The nematode has been detected in Victoria and stock deaths can be expected by the mid 1990s. Recommendations are made for the prevention of the disease, and reporting of possible cases. The use of the ARGT Diagnostic Service will allow farmers to determine the presence and-or level of the causal organisms, allowing objective management decisions. Legislation gives powers to authorised officers to control the sale of disease-transmitting or toxic material to other producers.
