Sentinel cattle at a number of localities in northern and central coastal New South Wales were sampled in summer-autumn of 1979, 1980, and 1981. A total of 118 orbiviruses were isolated: 99 of the Palyam group, 15 of the epizootic haemorrhagic disease of deer (EHD) group, and 4 of the bluetongue group, all serotype 21, though there was evidence of BLU-1 in 1980. The results generally confirmed conclusions from earlier survey data, regarding the frequency of orbivirus infections, the presence of bluetongue viruses, and the transience of many bluetongue-group antibody reactions.
