Pre-embarkation risk factors for sheep deaths during export by sea from Western Australia [live shipping to the Middle East]

Despite previous evidence that mortalities fell disproportionately to groups of sheep originating from particular farms, interviews with truck-drivers and previous owners in this study found no consistent association with any of a wide range of farm, handling, or management factors. The factor that did emerge was inappetance during pre-shipping lot feeding on pellets, which was associated with deaths aboard ship for individuals and for origin-groups. However, there was no difference between sheep lot-fed in sheds or paddocks; and clear evidence that feedlot non-eaters began eating pellets aboard ship.
