Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is the most important rabi crop of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Out of a total area of 8750 thousand hectare under wheat in the state, more than 2884 thousand hectare area is located in eastern U.P. with production of about 6035 metric tonnes and average productivity of 20.92 quintals per hectare in 1990-91 which is much lower than Punjab, Haryana and Western U.P. Besides other constraints, the problem of brown or orange or leaf rust caused by Puccinia recondita Rob. ex. Desm. is very severe and is of regular occurrence. The leaf rust generally appears in the second week of February and most of the commercial varieties of this area like Sonalika, C 306, Raj 3077, WH 147, Shekhar, Kharchia 65, Lok 1, K 65, K 68 and K 8027 got affected with a severity of more than 50/S. Due to infection of leaf rust in these varieties with such a severity, the commercial production is very much adversely affected. The yellow or stripe rust caused by Puccinia striiformis West, is of rare occurrence and appears in varieties like A-9-30-1 and LGM 201. The black rust or stem rust caused by Puccinia graminis tritici Eriks and Henn. appears late in the season i.e. during the last week of March in only some varieties like Kharchia 65, K 68, C 306, Agra local and A-9-30-l and that too in few years causing very little loss. The leaf rust appears regularly at the crop of heading stage which causes severe losses in the production of wheat crop.
