Compared with viral isolation, the antigen-capture ELISA is rapid and inexpensive and remains the preferred method for the routine detection of persistently-infected animals. Experiments indicated that testing of samples from young calves using ELISA be deferred until they are 3 months old if they have been fed colostrum.
