Asymmetry in pork farm-retail price transmission in Australia
1992
Griffith, G.R. | Piggott, N.E. (New South Wales Agriculture, Armidale (Australia))
There are concerns among pig producers that fewer, larger wholesalers and processors could use market power to expand the farm-retail price margins and that they may '...employ pricing strategies which result in complete and rapid pass-through of cost increases but slower and less complete transmission of cost savings'. This is known as asymmetric price transmission. The aim of this paper is to test the hypothesis of retail and wholesale price asymmetry in the Australian pork market using newer, more comprehensive methodologies.
