The yield and composition of milk from Merino sheep
1990
Bencini, R. | Purvis, I.W. (Western Australia Univ., Nedlands. Animal Science Dept.)
The milk production of a flock of 27 Merino ewes of 2 different genotypes and 4 age groups was measured for 13 weeks after lambing. The 2 genotypes did not differ in either milk quantity or composition. Ewes fed lupins produced significantly more milk than controls. Milk fat was positively correlated with total solids and protein was positively related with fat and total solids. The protein content was affected by ewe live weight and lamb birth weight. Milk production was negatively related with protein and total solids content, but unrelated to fat percentage.
