A water balance model based on neutron probe measurements of soil water content and estimates of crop evaporation from radiant canopy temperature measurements was used to estimate the contribution of shallow water tables to crop evaporation, and tested against measurements of mass change, evaporation and capillary rise in weighing lysimeters. An error of 20 percent was estimated when periods of 20 and 80 days were considered in loam and clay loam soils respectively.
