Growth, spikelet number and assimilate contents of the panicle on the main shoot of 20 indica rice varieties consisting of 4 duration groups were measured at intervals during the period from just before anthesis to maturity. Panicle development was longer in the late varieties, which yielded more because of higher grain numbers. The pattern of metabolite concentration was similar in all varieties -there was a sharp increase a few days before anthesis, followed by a decline until anthesis, then a decrease to a minimum at maturity. Pre-anthesis metabolite content of the panicle was higher in the late varieties. Partial correlation analysis found the vegetative duration to be the most important factor in yield determination.
