A pasture of Siratro, lotononis, Bryan plicatulum and Narok setaria carrying about 30 cows initially with calves, and then weaners at 4 stocking rates, was monitored over 5 yr. As grazing pressure increased, Siratro and setaria content decreased, while lotononis, plicatulum and native species increased. At no stage was there less than 1000 kg per ha dry matter on offer; leaf N was usually above 0.7 percent, P above 0.1 percent. A calving percentage of over 84 percent was obtained in all but one year. Annual growth rate of calves declined as pasture aged. Weaner and pasture growth were stable at all but the highest stocking rate (2.5 per ha), where a decline over time was observable.
