Within the total use of chemical plant protection products, herbicides are dominating. The use of herbicides is therefore viewed particularly critically. Ways to reduce the herbicide consumption have long been investigated, and have been used by farmers to a great extent. The possibilities and consequences of a complete renouncement of herbicides, as it is often called for, are demonstrated by the example of the use of herbicides in cereals. Based on the influence weeds have on yields, the course of harvest and storage, the quality of the product and the population dynamics of weeds if no herbicides are applied, it is stated that at present farming can by no means dispense with herbicides continues to be an important element within integrated weed control
