A study on coral reef fishes of Pulau Kapas was conducted to determine the species diversity, abundance, and habit and habitat. Two methods were used; the general survey and visual census methods using 150 meter transect. A total of 160 coral reef fish species, representing 47 families were identified. Nine species were new records for the fish fauna of Malaysia. The most abundant families in terms of numbers were Pomacentridae (43.24), Atherinidae (14.76), Labridae (13.94), Carangidae (9.87) and Scaridae (6.52). The most diversified families were Pomacentridae (16 species), Labridae (15 species), Lutjanidae (12 species) and Serranidae (10 species). The coral reef fishes were categorised into four types (Type A, Type B, Type C and Type D) according to their habit and habitat
