With the objectives to prevent excessive resource strain on the one hand, and to possibly maintain the profitability of wheat cropping on the other hand, several computer models have been developed as decision aids for long-term crop rotation planning, as well as for short-term production control of the wheat crop. The knowledge bases of these models contain production functions and production rules which have been identified by results of documented experiments and/or by nondocumented domain knowledge of crop experts. According to the decision areas they are aimed at, the programs can be subdivided into strategical and tactical decision aids. In the paper, three of the models are described in more detail. The model ROTACALC supports strategical decisions regarding the configuration of crop rotations which contain wheat besides other crops. Field specific conditions are taken into account. The model FERTRIC supports tactical decisions concerning the optimal amount, number of applications, and timing of the nitrogen fertilization during the production period under field specific conditions. The model METRO supports tactical decisions for fungus control in wheat, giving advice about timing of measures and spraying materials. The proposals are based on field specific conditions, especially the actual disease situation. The model can be used repeatedly during the relevant stages of the wheat growth period. In addition, the paper reports the results of biannual experiments, conducted to test the practicability of the tactical programs, and to gain some insight into the comparative advantage of the model's proposals as compared to the conventional decision rules, commonly used by farmers
