Possibilities of seed production development in Slovenia

Data on seed production of major field crop and vegetable species in the last 14 years are analysed. Seed production in Slovenia covered less than 50 % of domestic needs but has significantly increased since 1991. Until 1991 the prevailing seed production was that of cereal crops, potato, forage plants and certain vegetable species. In the last years rapid development in production of cereal crops, maize and sugar beet was recorded. Appropriate legislation, good network of testing fields, guidelines in the seed production of agricultural plants and application of efficient agricultural policy will be needed.
