Influence of rootstock and height of training system on spring frost sensibility of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon grape cultivars in the Umbria region

The spring-frost, occurred between April 21st and 25th 1991, with the minimum temperature of about -2 deg C, has damaged most shoots in all combinations examinated: cultivar (Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon) x rootstock (K5BB, P1103, 420A and SO4) x training system (height of cordon m 0.9 and 1.7). However both the cultivar and the rootstock have confirmed to be important factors for spring-frost resistance. Lower damages have been observed in Cabernet Sauvignon as compared to Chardonnay, and with K5BB and P1103 rootstock respect to SO4 and especially 420A. The development of "replacement buds" was higher in Cabernet Sauvignon and in P1103 and 420A rootstock, whereas the development of "crown buds" was higher in Chardonnay and in K5BB. The good fertility of secondary shoots in Cabernet Sauvignon allowed a recovery of productivity of about 40-50% compared to 20% in Chardonnay

[La brinata primaverile, verificatasi tra il 21 e il 25 aprile 1991, con una temperatura minima di circa -2 gradi C, ha danneggiato la maggior parte delle gemme in tutte le combinazioni esaminate: cultivar (Chardonnay e Cabernet Sauvignon) x portinnesto (K5BB, P1103, 420A e SO4) x sistema di coltivazione (altezza del cordone m 0.9 e 1.7). Comunque, sia la cultivar che il portinnesto si sono rivelati fattori importanti per la resistenza alla brina primaverile. Si sono osservati danni minori nel Cabernet Sauvignon che nello Chardonnay, e con portinnesti K5BB e P1103 piuttosto che SO4 e soprattutto 420A. Lo sviluppo di "germogli sostitutivi" e' stato piu' alto nel Cabernet Sauvignon e con portinnesto P1103 e 420A, laddove lo sviluppo di "germogli superiori" e' stato maggiore nello Chardonnay e con K5BB. La buona fertilita' dei germogli secondari del Cabernet Sauvignon ha permesso un recupero della produttivita' del 40-50% circa rispetto al 20% dello Chardonnay]
