This study was a preliminary marketing investigation of the global markets for crabs with emphasis on mud crabs. Many countries in Asia and Europe have high crab consumption growth rates and total consumption figures. Four of the high growth-high consumption countries also rely heavily on imports for consumption. Although some of these countries (particularly the European countries) may not be consumers of mud crabs, it may be possible for mud crabs to the substituted for those currently consumed. There is strong demand for mud crabs in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. High prices are paid for live mud crabs in many Asian countries, particularly for females with mature ovaries. Australia's major world competitors have experienced problems with supply due to pollution and-or over utilisation of the species, especially unregulated harvests of immature crabs. Australia may have a competitive advantage over these competitors.
