Young apple trees in perlite culture were treated with added phosphorus in spring, summer, autumn, or in the second growing season. Spring P increased top growth, top-root ratio, P uptake and flowering in the second year; summer P increased the other measures, but not flowering in the second year; autumn P increased P uptake but not growth in the first year. Responses were greater in trees treated following a low-P treatment. All applications raised P content in tree parts including leaves and fruit. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.
