Soil acidification in the higher rainfall wheatbelt zone of south-east Australia [Victoria; New South Wales]

Surveys of the extent and severity of soil acidification in 2 cereal growing areas in north-eastern Victoria and the eastern Riverina of New South Wales covering a total of 0.8 million ha are presented. Causes, processes and rates of acidification are discussed along with amelioration of acidity. The most acidified soils are pozolic and the least are clays and red-brown earths. Classification of profiles at Australian Great Group level combined with pHCa measurements for surface and sub-surface horizons provides a useful means of determining both current acidity status and future risk.
