Effects of CO2 enrichment and nitrogen stress on growth and partitioning of dry matter and nitrogen in wheat and maize

In a glasshouse experiment, wheat plants responded to enhanced CO2 levels across a range of N supply from deficient to more than adequate for maximum growth. CO2 enriched wheat produced increased dry matter, tiller and ear number regardless of N level; and accumulated more N, but the proportional increase in N was not as great as that in dry matter, so that N concentration was lowered. Critical values for diagnosis of the N status of wheat will need to be reconsidered as atmospheric CO2 increases, and there may be effects on the baking quality of grain due to reduced N concentrations. Maize responded to increases in N, but not to CO2.
