53 field experiments were conducted at 34 sites in 5 regions over 3 years to determine the relationship between yield of wheat and each of several indices of Al toxicity. The concentration of Al in KCl extracts of the 15-25 cm soil layer was well correlated with yield in one region, provided that the fertiliser treatments of the soils were similar. The ratio Al:Na in KCl extract was a better predictor than Al alone over regions and soils with differing fertiliser treatments.
